The Furminator - A Review - How This Undercoat Fur Remover Comb Works on My Dogs

The Furminator is a comb designed to remove the undercoat of a pet's fur. Because dog fur is everywhere in my household, in my food, on the floors, in the bed sheets, and on my clothes, I decided to give the Furminator dog deshedding tool a try. I have 2 large dogs, one of which is a profuse shedder. He is a German Shepherd mix and sheds year round, but the summer months are the worst, especially because we live in Florida and it's hot. His body compensates by getting rid of a lot of fur. My other dog has very short hair and shedding isn't a problem for him but he just loves to be combed because it feels good.

I had seen the Furminator commercials on television and it looked great, but because it was one of the "As Seen On TV" advertisement I was a little skeptical. During the summer last year though, when the shedding problem was the worst, I gave in and bought one. When it arrived it didn't look like anything special, just another version of a metal dog comb. The first time I used the comb it took out the most excess fur, and during successive grooming the amount of fur it removed began to decrease. I typically comb my dogs about once a week, which is my best estimate for grooming them based on their needs.

I've been using the Furminator to comb my dogs for about a year now and it works extremely well. It looks very low tech but the results are impressive. It removes the undercoat and dead skin from my German Shepherd mix without pulling his skin. He sits very still and seems to enjoy the grooming session. Afterwards his coat is soft and shiny.

Make sure to read the instructions included with the Furminator before using it on your pet. It's important that the dog fur is tangle free when using the Furminator because pulling on fur knots may hurt the animal. Also the fur should be dry and relatively clean. The manufacturer recommends brushing once or twice a week for 15-20 minutes using long strokes. I don't recommend combing the same area too much as it may irritate your dog.
