The main ingredients

Chicken is the first ingredient, which means this formula contains more chicken than any other ingredient. Chicken contains a lot of water (between 80 and 90%), which is lost during the cooking process, so after processing this chicken may actually represent a smaller part of the total content. Chicken is a good protein source, as well as containing Vitamin B6, Phosphorus, Niacin, and Selenium. Chicken also contains fatty acids

The next ingredient is chicken meal. Chicken meal is concentrated, and contains around 300% the protein of fresh chicken.

The third ingredient is cracked pearled barley. Barley is a good carb source, which is absorbed slowly in the intenstinal tracts, helping keep blood sugar levels even.

The fourth ingredient is millet. Millet is a gluten-free grain from certain seed grasses. It is rich in the B-complex vitamins, as well as fiber and other essential minerals.

The fifth ingredient is brewers rice. Brewers rice is the dried extracted residue of rice coming from the manufacture of beer, and has very little nutritional value, being used only as an inexpensive carbohydrate

Other ingredients of note in 4health Chicken and Rice

Beet pulp: Beet pulp is a high fiber by-product from processing sugar beets. While it contains no nutritional value, it does serve as a good food source for the beneficial bacteria (probiotics) in the dogs digestive tract, which helps the beneficial bacteria to flourish. It also helps ensure a firmer stool in your dog.

Fish meal: Fish meal is another great source for omega-3 fatty acid, as well as fish oil that is needed to maintain a healthy skin and coat on your dog.

Some fish meals have been found to contain ethoxyquin, a fat preservative that may cause problems with your dogs liver. Since this is an anonymous product, the chances of it containing ethoxyquin may be higher.

Chicory root: Chicory root is rich in simple sugars and the polysaccharide inulin. Studies suggest that inulin can have a beneficial effect on the gut's 'good bacteria' which is making it increasingly popular as a prebiotic and as a source of soluble dietary fiber. Inulin is also fairly sweet making it a popular natural dog food flavor enhancer.

Chelated minerals: Chelated minerals are those minerals that are chemically attached to protein, which makes them about 20% more readily absorbed. Chelated minerals are typically associated with higher quality dog foods.

So is it a good dog food?

4health Chicken and Rice

This shows 4health Chicken and Rice contains near average protein, near average fat, and a below average carbohydrate content.

So, the bottom line is that 4health Chicken and Rice is an above average dry dog food, with a notable amount of meat, and is therefore highly recommended, receiving four stars.
