The main ingredients

Whole grain brown rice is the first ingredient, which means this formula contains more brown rice than any other ingredient. Brown rice is a cereal grain often used in place of corn. Brown rice is higher in fiber than white rice, and less processed. It can also be a little more irritating to the stomach than white rice. It's a simple carbohydrate that can give dogs quick energy. Used in conjunction with more complex carbs in a dog food, brown rice is a good ingredient

The next ingredient is chicken. Chicken contains a lot of water (between 80 and 90%), which is lost during the cooking process, so after processing this chicken may actually represent a smaller part of the total content. Chicken is a good protein source, as well as containing Vitamin B6, Phosphorus, Niacin, and Selenium. Chicken also contains fatty acids

The third ingredient is chicken meal. Chicken meal is concentrated, and contains around 300% the protein of fresh chicken.

The fourth ingredient is chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols). Obtained by rendering chicken (skimming the fat from the surface of the liquid), chicken fat is a great source for lonoleic acid, an omega-6 acid necessary for a quality life. Regardless how it sounds, this is a quality dog food ingredient.

The fifth ingredient is dried plain beet pulp. Beet pulp is a high fiber by-product from processing sugar beets. While it contains no nutritional value, it does serve as a good food source for the beneficial bacteria (probiotics) in the dogs digestive tract, which helps the beneficial bacteria to flourish. It also helps ensure a firmer stool in your dog.

Other ingredients of note in 4health Healthy Weight Formula

Fish meal: Fish meal is another great source for omega-3 fatty acid, as well as fish oil that is needed to maintain a healthy skin and coat on your dog.

Some fish meals have been found to contain ethoxyquin, a fat preservative that may cause problems with your dogs liver. Since this is an anonymous product, the chances of it containing ethoxyquin may be higher.

Chicory root: Chicory root is rich in simple sugars and the polysaccharide inulin. Studies suggest that inulin can have a beneficial effect on the gut's 'good bacteria' which is making it increasingly popular as a prebiotic and as a source of soluble dietary fiber. Inulin is also fairly sweet making it a popular natural dog food flavor enhancer.

Chelated minerals: Chelated minerals are those minerals that are chemically attached to protein, which makes them about 20% more readily absorbed. Chelated minerals are typically associated with higher quality dog foods.

So is it a good dog food?

4health Healthy Weight Formula

For comparison, the guaranteed analyses is converted from an as fed bases to a dry matter bases. This results in this dog food containing approximately 22% protein and 10% fat. Again, using the dry matter bases we can calculate an carbohydrate content of 60% and a fat to protein ratio of 45%.

This shows 4health Healthy Weight Formula contains below average protein, below average fat, and a above average carbohydrate content.

So, the bottom line is that 4health Healthy Weight Formula is an average dry dog food, with a below average amount of meat, and is therefore not recommended, receiving one and a half stars.
