The main ingredients

Ground yellow corn is the first ingredient, which means this formula contains more corn than any other ingredient. Corn is a very controversial ingredient. Many of the commercial dog food manufacturers claim it is a vital ingredient for your dogs nutrition. However, there is only modest nutritional value to corn. And corn has been linked to many food allergy problems in dogs.

Therefore corn is not considered a preferred component in any dog food, and should never find its way into the top five ingredients.

The next ingredient is meat and bone meal. Per AAFCO meat and bone meal is a dry "rendered product from mammal tissues, including bone, exclusive of any added blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents." Typically meat and bone meal has a lower nutritional value than most other meat meals.

Another problem with meat and bone meal is that it is an anonymous meat. Since there is no mention of what type of meat is used, it could be any kind of meat, including roadkill or diseased livestock. Generic meat concentrates such as this is not considered a quality dog food ingredient.

The third ingredient is soybean meal. Soybean meal is a byproduct of soybean oil production which is commonly found in farm animal feeds.

Although soybean meal contains about 48% protein, there is still a lower nutritional value of that protein when compared to meat protein.

The fourth ingredient is beef tallow preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E). Beef tallow is the fatty by-product of rendering beef. Tallow is high in saturated fats, but use of this ingredient is normally associated with lower quality dog foods..

The fifth ingredient is corn gluten meal. Per the AAFCO, corn gluten meal is "the dried residue from corn after the removal of the larger part of the starch and germ, and the separation of the bran by the process employed in the wet milling manufacture of corn starch or syrup..." Compared to meat, glutens are far inferior grai-based proteins, and lack much of the amino acids necessary for a dogs life.

Therefore, corn gluten meal is not a preferred ingredient in any pet foods.

Other ingredients of note in ALPO Prime Cuts Savory Beef Flavor

Animal digest: Animal digest is a chemically hydrolyzed mixture of animal by-products that is typically sprayed onto the surface of a dry kibble solely to improve its taste.

Artificial coloring: Artificial coloring has only one use in dog food... to make it more appealing to humans, since the dog doesn't care what color it is.

Menadione: Menadione is a synthetic vitamin K3 that has been linked to liver toxicity and a break-down of red blood cells. The FDA has banned its use in human supplements, but there are no such restrictions in pet foods. Some advocates state that this is an essential addative, while others highly disagree.

Non-chelated minerals: The minerals listed do not appear to be chelated, which means that they may be more difficult to absorb. Non-chelated minerals are typically associated with low quality dog foods.
