The main ingredients

Chicken is the first ingredient, which means this formula contains more chicken than any other ingredient. Chicken contains a lot of water (between 80 and 90%), which is lost during the cooking process, so after processing this chicken may actually represent a smaller part of the total content. Chicken is a good protein source, as well as containing Vitamin B6, Phosphorus, Niacin, and Selenium. Chicken also contains fatty acids

The next ingredient is chicken meal. Chicken meal is concentrated, and contains around 300% the protein of fresh chicken.

The third ingredient is ground rice. Ground rice, also known as rice flour, can be made with either brown or white rice. This is a gluten free alternative to wheat flour. The brown rice does contain more nutritional value.

The fourth ingredient is cracked pearled barley. Barley is a good carb source, which is absorbed slowly in the intenstinal tracts, helping keep blood sugar levels even.

The fifth ingredient is chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols). Obtained by rendering chicken (skimming the fat from the surface of the liquid), chicken fat is a great source for lonoleic acid, an omega-6 acid necessary for a quality life. Regardless how it sounds, this is a quality dog food ingredient.

Other ingredients of note in 4health Performance Formula

Beet pulp: Beet pulp is a high fiber by-product from processing sugar beets. While it contains no nutritional value, it does serve as a good food source for the beneficial bacteria (probiotics) in the dogs digestive tract, which helps the beneficial bacteria to flourish. It also helps ensure a firmer stool in your dog.

Chicory root: Chicory root is rich in simple sugars and the polysaccharide inulin. Studies suggest that inulin can have a beneficial effect on the gut's 'good bacteria' which is making it increasingly popular as a prebiotic and as a source of soluble dietary fiber. Inulin is also fairly sweet making it a popular natural dog food flavor enhancer.

Chelated minerals: Chelated minerals are those minerals that are chemically attached to protein, which makes them about 20% more readily absorbed. Chelated minerals are typically associated with higher quality dog foods.

So is it a good dog food?

4health Performance Formula

For comparison, the guaranteed analyses is converted from an as fed bases to a dry matter bases. This results in this dog food containing approximately 33% protein and 22% fat. Again, using the dry matter bases we can calculate an carbohydrate content of 37% and a fat to protein ratio of 67%.

This shows 4health Performance Formula contains above average protein, above average fat, and below average carbohydrate content.

So, the bottom line is that 4health Performance Formula is an above average dry dog food, with a below average to moderate amount of meat.

4health Performance Formula receives five stars and is energetically recommended.
