The main ingredients

Lamb is the first ingredient, which means this formula contains more lamb than any other ingredient. Although lamb is a quality ingredient, it contains about 80% moisture. cooking drives out the moisture, leaving just a small fraction of the original weight in the final produce. Therefore, it may actually account for a smaller part of the total content than reflected on the ingredients list.

The next ingredient is lamb meal. Lamb meal contains around three times the protein of lamb. Lamb meal is also a good source of Vitamins A, B6, and B12 as well as Riboflavin, Niacin, Phosphorous, Manganese, Iron, Zinc, Copper and Selenium. Lamb has a lot of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids that are necessary for a quality life

The third ingredient is egg product. Per AAFCO egg product is "Product obtained from egg graders, egg breakers, and/or hatchery operations that is dehydrated, handled as liquid or frozen. These shall be labeled as per USDA regulations governing eggs and egg products (9CFR, Part 59). This product shall be free of shells or other non-egg materials except in such amounts which might occur unavoidably in good processing practices, and contain a maximum ash content of 6% on a dry matter basis."

Egg product of good quality adds more protein to a food formulation than eggs, which contain a lot of moisture.

The fourth ingredient is rice. Rice can be either brown or white. Rice is a cereal grain often used instead of corn.

White rice has had the grain's healthier outer layer removed. Brown rice is more nutritious, but can be a little more irritating to the stomach.

Rice is a simple carbohydrate that can give your dog some quick energy. If used in conjunction with other more complex carbs, rice can be a good ingredient.

The fifth ingredient is millet. Millet is a gluten-free grain from certain seed grasses. It is rich in the B-complex vitamins, as well as fiber and other essential minerals.

Other ingredients of note in 4health Puppy Formula

Peas: Peas provide a good supply of protein and dietary fiber. They also are a natural source for vitamins C and K. However, some dogs experience problems digesting peas because of the fibrous cellulose contained in the peas.

Chicken fat: Obtained by rendering chicken (skimming the fat from the surface of the liquid), chicken fat is a great source for lonoleic acid, an omega-6 acid necessary for a quality life. Regardless how it sounds, this is a quality dog food ingredient.

Potato: Potatoes are a good source of dietary fiber, vitamins B6 and C, as well as potassium and manganese.

Ocean fish meal: Fish meal is another great source for omega-3 fatty acid, as well as fish oil that is needed to maintain a healthy skin and coat on your dog. Some fish meals have been found to contain ethoxyquin, a fat preservative that may cause problems with your dogs liver

Chicory root: Chicory root is rich in simple sugars and the polysaccharide inulin. Studies suggest that inulin can have a beneficial effect on the gut's 'good bacteria' which is making it increasingly popular as a prebiotic and as a source of soluble dietary fiber. Inulin is also fairly sweet making it a popular natural dog food flavor enhancer.

Chelated minerals: Chelated minerals are those minerals that are chemically attached to protein, which makes them about 20% more readily absorbed. Chelated minerals are typically associated with higher quality dog foods.

So is it a good dog food?

4health Puppy Formula

This shows 4health Puppy Formula contains above average protein, near average fat, and below average carbohydrate content.

So, the bottom line is that 4health Puppy Formula is an above average dry dog food, with a below average to moderate amount of meat.

Random Dog Quote

Dogs are minor angels, and I don't mean that facetiously. They love unconditionally, forgive immediately, are the truest of friends, willing to do anything that makes us happy, etcetera. If we attributed some of those qualities to a person we would say they are special. If they had ALL of them, we would call them angelic. But because it's "only" a dog, we dismiss them as sweet or funny but little more.
