The main ingredients

Chicken meal is the first ingredient, which means this formula contains more chicken meal than any other ingredient. Chicken meal is concentrated, and contains around 300% the protein of fresh chicken.

The next ingredient is steel-cut oats. Oats provide both insoluble and soluble fiber to support digestive health, allowing food to move slowly through the digestive tract to optimize the absorption of nutrients. Oats are also a protein source, containing about four grams of protein per ounce

The third ingredient is deboned chicken. Chicken contains a lot of water (between 80 and 90%), which is lost during the cooking process, so after processing this chicken may actually represent a smaller part of the total content. Chicken is a good protein source, as well as containing Vitamin B6, Phosphorus, Niacin, and Selenium. Chicken also contains fatty acids

The fourth ingredient is whole potato. Potatoes are a good source of dietary fiber, vitamins B6 and C, as well as potassium and manganese..

The fifth ingredient is peas. Peas provide a good supply of protein and dietary fiber. They also are a natural source for vitamins C and K. However, some dogs experience problems digesting peas because of the fibrous cellulose contained in the peas.

Other ingredients of note in Acana Light & Fit

Flounder: Flounder is an exceptional source of protein, Vitamin B12, Phosphorus and Selenium. It also is a good source for Vitamin B6 and Magnesium.

Although raw fish of most kinds is a quality ingredient for dog foods, it is important to realize that raw fish is about 80% water, so after processing this item will represent a much smaller portion of the total content.

Chicken fat: Obtained by rendering chicken (skimming the fat from the surface of the liquid), chicken fat is a great source for lonoleic acid, an omega-6 acid necessary for a quality life. Regardless how it sounds, this is a quality dog food ingredient.

Chelated minerals: Chelated minerals are those minerals that are chemically attached to protein, which makes them about 20% more readily absorbed. Chelated minerals are typically associated with higher quality dog foods.

So is it a good dog food?

Acana Light & Fit contains four sources of meat protein, two of which show up in the top five ingredients. The other two include deboned flounder and chicken liver.

For comparison, the guaranteed analyses is converted from an as fed bases to a dry matter bases. This results in this dog food containing approximately 39% protein and 11% fat. Again, using the dry matter bases we can calculate an carbohydrate content of 42% and a fat to protein ratio of 28%.

This shows Acana Light & Fit contains an above average protein, a below average fat, and a below average carbohydrate content.

So, the bottom line is that Acana Light & Fit is an above average dry dog food, with a significant amount of meat, and is therefore highly recommended, receiving five stars.
