The main ingredients

Lamb Meal is the first ingredient, which means this formula contains more lamb meal than any other ingredient. Lamb meal contains around three times the protein of lamb. Lamb meal is also a good source of Vitamins A, B6, and B12 as well as Riboflavin, Niacin, Phosphorous, Manganese, Iron, Zinc, Copper and Selenium. Lamb has a lot of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids that are necessary for a quality life

The next ingredient is Brewers Rice. Brewers rice is the dried extracted residue of rice coming from the manufacture of beer, and has very little nutritional value, being used only as an inexpensive carbohydrate

The third ingredient is Corn Meal. While AAFCO does not define corn meal, it does define corn gluten meal and corn germ meal. This ingredient most closely relates to corn gluten meal, which is used widely in farm animal feeds and in pet foods. While corn gluten can be up to 60% protein, it is vegetable based, and not as readily utilized by a dog. Many dogs have problems when corn outweighs meat in a dog food.

The fourth ingredient is Ground Whole Grain Barley. Barley is a good carb source, which is absorbed slowly in the intenstinal tracts, helping keep blood sugar levels even..

The fifth ingredient is Ground Whole Grain Sorghum. Sorghum is a starchy cereal grain similar to corn in nutritional value. However, it is gluten-free, and creates a smoother blood sugar behavior than other grains, so is considered an acceptable non-meat ingredient in dog foods.

Other ingredients of note in Iams ProActive Health Adult Lamb Meal & Rice

Chicken by-product meal: Chicken by-products are the rendered product of waste in a slaughterhouse. It is made from whatever is left of a chicken after all the good parts have been removed. While this means it could contain organs, which are nutritious, it could actually be anything except real meat! This includes feet and beaks.

Since this is a meal, it is a meat concentrate, and therefore will contain three times the protein of the chicken parts themselves.

Chicken by-products should be considered an inferior product, and would be associated with lower quality dog foods.

Beet pulp: Beet pulp is a high fiber by-product from processing sugar beets. While it contains no nutritional value, it does serve as a good food source for the beneficial bacteria (probiotics) in the dogs digestive tract, which helps the beneficial bacteria to flourish. It also helps ensure a firmer stool in your dog.

Non-chelated minerals: The minerals listed do not appear to be chelated, which means that they may be more difficult to absorb. Non-chelated minerals are typically associated with low quality dog foods.

So is it a good dog food?

Iams ProActive Health Adult Lamb Meal & Rice, judging by its ingredients, is an average dry dog food. It contains two sources of meat protein in the top five ingredients.

For comparison, the guaranteed analyses is converted from an as fed bases to a dry matter bases. This results in this dog food containing approximately 24% protein and 13% fat. Again, using the dry matter bases we can calculate an carbohydrate content of 55% and a fat to protein ratio of 54%.

Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe. We are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made.
