First place - Animal Aid for Vermilion Area (AAVA)

Animal Aid for Vermilion Area (AAVA), in Abbeville, Louisiana, was nominated by Kim. Here is what she had to say about AAVA:

This organization has worked tirelessly to save animals in my parish. They do not turn away any animal even if it is very sick and will be expensive to save. They are truly HEROES to animals and to me !!!

Animal Aid for Vermilion Area pulls a lot of their rescues from the local Animal Control facility, located in Kaplan, Louisiana. This is extremely important, since that pound does not adopt out the animals it receives. The owner is given four days to reclaim their pet, after which the animal is killed. And, if the dog is a surrender, meaning the owners dropped their dog off at the pound, that dog can and often is immediately put to death. The only hope for them is for a local shelter to pull them from the pound and then rehome them.

Second place - Boxer Butts & Other Mutts

Boxer Butts & Other Mutts, in Arden, North Carolina, was nominated by Barbara Rivers. Here is what she had to say about Boxer Butts & Other Mutts:

Heidi Wagner works non-stop to rescue mainly Boxers, but also a few dogs of mixed breeds (hence the name of the rescue!). She and her team have been pulling the pups from high kill shelters for the last 4 years, making funds available for veterinary treatments, and placing the fur-babies in loving forever homes. I came across them on FaceBook about 2 years ago, and was able to donate to their cause twice. Please consider donating to this NC rescue!

Boxer Butts & Other Mutts pulls most of their rescues from other shelters, takes care of all of their medical needs, and finds loving forever homes for them. Many of their rescued dogs require serious medical attention, which they receive, but all of them are fully vetted, which includes vaccinations, spaying/neutering and chip implants. Boxer Butts & Other Mutts relies on foster care from homes located through out Buncombe and Henderson Counties. They do not have a facility yet.

Third place - California Labradors, Retrievers & More Rescue

California Labradors, Retrievers & More Rescue, in San Diego, California, was nominated by Lindsay. Here is what she had to say about California Labradors, Retrievers & More Rescue:

This group saves dogs from high-kill shelters in my area and has a reasonable adoption process. They are making a huge difference.

California Labradors, Retrievers & More Rescue is one of the most active rescues in southern California. They save over 1000 dogs every year, many of them with serious medical conditions. As their name implies, you can adopt a Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Australian Shepherd, Border Collie, Bull Mastiff, and many, many more breeds of dogs from them.

Dogs feel very strongly that they should always go with you in the car, in case the need should arise for them to bark violently at nothing right in your ear.
