Best Friend’s Friend - Previous Winners for the Best Dog Shelter or Rescue Contest

Started in 2014, the DogNation Best Friend’s Friend contest was designed to find the best dog rescue or shelter based on recommendations from the readers and voting over a two month period following completion of the contest year. Many great organizations are nominated, but only three will stand out, and receive recognition for being the best of the best; the best at preventing needless euthenasia, the best at finding new loving homes for our abandoned canine friends, the best at exposing the plight of millions of homeless, abandoned, or abused dogs. This page is dedicated to those elite among peers. Please visit their websites, visit their offices if you can, and help them help others.

This page is dedicated to the reigning champions, but don’t forget our previous winners! Links to previous contests are found below.

First place - Bully Paws Pit Bull Patriots, Inc

Bully Paws Pit Bull Patriots, in Fredericksburg, Virginia, was nominated by Debbie Missell. Here is what she had to say about Bully Paws Pit Bull Patriots:

Because of the awesome work they do advocating for the pit bull breed, savimg lives by pulling dogs from shelters, sometimes minutes away from euthanasia, promoting education about the breed. Bully Paws is a well rounded rescue run only by an all volunteer staff of dedicated volunteers. Their medical fund has been hard hit over the past 6 months and they could really use this money.

As stated by Debbie, Bully Paws Pit Bull Patriots is a rescue dedicated to helping pit bull-like dogs by placing homeless dogs in foster care, and eventually a new forever family. It works with other rescues in Virginia, Maryland, and the DC area.

Second place - The Sighthound Underground (SHUG)

The Sighthound Underground, in McLean, Virginia, was nominated by Wendy Scarborough, one of the volunteers, and is a repeat winner. Here is what she had to say about SHUG:

The Sighthound Underground knows no boundaries. They rescue, rehab, transport, and foster Sighthounds and Sighthound mixes. Helping disadvantaged or neglected dogs in the US and Overseas. Specializing in the underdogs, but helping any long legged, skinny dog. The Sighthound Underground would benefit in using this funding towards well needed vet care.

The Sighthound Underground (SHUG), as the name implies, is dedicated to re-homing many different breeds classified as sighthounds. Sighthounds respond to prey they actually see, as opposed to scenthounds, which respond to prey they can smell. The goal of SHUG is to have a nationwide, and even international, net of rescues. They currently adopt to loving families throughout the US and in Canada.

Third place - Wichita Animal Action League

Wichita Animal Action League, in Wichita, Kansas, was nominated by Sherrie. Here is what she had to say about Wichita Animal Action League:

This summer I became aware of a mother dog, and her two puppies that were not being taken care of. I contacted many, many rescues in my area to no avail. Waal was the only rescue to help me. Because of their help all three dogs are either adopted or up for adoption, or will be. They do a wonderful job of helping any animal in need. It is a very well run organization, with a fantastic board of directors.

The Wichita Animal Action League, or WAAL, works closely with local agencies in alleviating abuse and neglect cases by working directly with the owners, and, if necessary, finding new homes.

Dogs feel very strongly that they should always go with you in the car, in case the need should arise for them to bark violently at nothing right in your ear.
